Bulawayo was historically known as Zimbabwe's manufacturing hub. All big companies like Zimbabwe Engineering Company (Zeco), Hubert Davies, Radar Metal Industries, National Blankets, G & D Shoes, Merlin, Tregers Group, Stewarts & Lloyds, Hunyani Holdings, Cold

Storage Company (which processed beef exports), among others, made Bulawayo tick. However, although some of these companies no longer exist, they provided employment to thousands in Bulawayo.
Official information from the Ministry of Industry and Commerce reveals that more than 87 companies have closed shop in the city

Bulawayo, which drew people from all over the country, is no longer the same. The youth have lost hope of ever finding jobs in what was once the hub of the country's manufacturing sector while some have left abadala (parents) and joined the great trek down South in search of survival.
